Redguard:Overview
The requirements for this category are a work in progress. The content presented in this article currently shows the proposed category requirements, which are subject to change.
Requirements
The Redguard 100% Completion Speedrun could be defined by three main criteria that must be simultaneously be achieved by the end of the run:
- End the run with your log containing the most possible non-custom entries possible.
- These can be viewed by pressing L to bring up the log, and scrolling through them all just before the final fight.
- There are 136 log entries in the game, but not all of them are obtainable due to mutual exclusivity between some entries. The maximum amount of entries logically possible is required, but no specific mutually exclusive entries are required over others.
- The term non-custom clarifies that log entries created by the user (which appear as yellow text) do not count as valid log entries (which appear as gray text).
- End the run with your inventory containing every visible, permanent, and obtainable item in the game.
- These can be viewed by pressing I to bring up the inventory, and scrolling through them all just before the final fight.
- The term visible rules out any items that can be interacted with and/or used, but do not appear in the inventory screen.
- Example: Ingredients can be obtained and used by the player, but do not appear in your inventory. Several interactable maps, posters, and books can be picked up, but not stored in your inventory. None of these are required.
- The term permanent rules out any items that are consumable, get replaced by items, or can be removed from your inventory in any other way.
- Example: Potions can be obtained and then removed by consuming them. The Sabre gets replaced by the Soul Sword. These and other similar items are therefore not required.
- The term obtainable rules out any items that are technically in the game's code and have an item ID, but are not accessible to the player through normal gameplay.
- This specifically targets the Ring of Invisibility, which is in the game's code, but does not appear in the game, so it is not required.
- There are a few exceptional cases that need to be clarified:
- The book Elven Artifacts vIII has two versions with unique IDs, the one you initially buy to trade for the map, and an extra copy that stays permanently in your inventory. The permanent one is required, but the tradable one is not.
- The Bucket and Bucket with Water are a unique case where the item cannot leave your inventory, but exists in two states back and forth, so one or the other is required at the end of the run.
- Reach the final cutscene after defeating Richtor.
- The other two main requirements should be verified briefly prior to finishing this fight, as they are not visible after completing the game.
Rules for Speedrunning
A big topic to debate is how to configure DOSBox to properly to most accurately represent how the game performs on its intended hardware, given that the official versions available on Steam and GOG are both emulated. The Any% category uses a batch file to patch the game into a deliberately lesser state to balance out hardware requirements between runners, but given that the 100% categories will likely all be RTA, we may want to have a different ruleset. The primary thing to consider is what cycle count to cap DOSBox at, since the game will run faster the higher the cycle count we allow.
