Menu Float is a glitch where you can use a function key to open a menu right before you fast travel, resulting in that menu floating over the normal gameplay.
Instructions
- Select a fast travel location on the map.
- Just before the loading screen appears, hit F1, F2, or F3 to bring up your desired menu screen. You should hear the menu sound effect just before the loading screen appears.
- When you load back in, you will now have the menu floating above the normal gameplay wherever you go, including through doors to other cells.
Additional Notes
- The map appears to not be possible to bring up, even if you quickly select other options before pressing F4.
- Selecting the skills screen allows you to see your skill experience bars increase during gameplay.
- The glitch ends if you bring up your menu screen normally, but other menu screens do not seem to affect this glitch.
- Selecting "No" to the fast travel option and quickly pressing F4 twice will freeze the menu so that only the character preview is visible.
- There are several ways of interacting with the floating menu:
- Opening the wait menu and pressing the up or down keys will allow you to navigate through and use the floating menu with keyboard inputs.
- Talking to an NPC will occasionally allow your keyboard inputs to affect the floating menu for a short duration during the zoom-in on the NPC's face.
- Opening the console allows you to use your mouse to interact with the floating menu.
- Since use of the console besides for displaying the games framerate is disallowed in the speedrun this cannot be used in the run.
- Opening a container while holding the shift, up, or down keys will allow you to navigate through and use the floating menu with keyboard inputs. However, the container menu will be displayed on top of the floating menu, making it difficult to tell what item is highlighted.
Mechanics
This glitch requires further research to fully understand its mechanics. Some information in this section is currently speculation.
This glitch seems heavily exploitable in several ways, including the fact that the inventory menu does not properly update when you use hotkeyed items or use containers, resulting in your inventory menu being desynced from itself visually.
Related Glitches
- This is a foundational glitch that results in several other exploits, such as Player Superposition and Menu Float Dupe.
