The first of many Oblivion gates to be closed during the speedrun.

Current Best Route

Quest stages are indicated in parentheses at the end of each step when they are updated. Keep in mind that these optimized steps are within the context of the 100% speedrun route, meaning that certain items and setups are sometimes assumed to have already been performed prior to the start of the quest.

  1. Fast travel to the Kvatch Oblivion Gate.
  2. Enter the Oblivion portal. Jump around the gates on the bridge and make your way to the main tower directly in front of you.
  3. Make your way to the top of the tower and grab the Sigil Stone. (Casual players use Perma Key, the route uses a Saddle save). Fall down without taking fall damage to exit the area early. (50)
  4. Kill all the remaining enemies and follow the Quest Marker to talk to Savlian Matius.
    I’m ready. Let’s go. (60)
  5. Enter Kvatch and kill all the enemies in the first area, then talk to Savlian Matius again. (70) (80)
  6. Enter the Chapel. Leave and enter the chapel again to spawn Savlian Matius in.
  7. Talk to Savlian Matius. (90)
  8. The quest will complete itself once the refugees have reached the encampment. (✔ 200)

Bugs

Currently there are no known bugs associated with this quest that affect the 100% route.

Route Logic Considerations

  • Talk to Brother Martin to advance Find the Heir while you are in the Chapel during this quest.
  • The Battle for Castle Kvatch should be done directly after finishing this quest.
  • The Bloodgrass needed for Vampire Cure should be harvested near the entrance to the tower of the Kvatch Oblivion Gate.
  • A Saddle save made in Abandoned Mine can be used to skip to the top of the tower in the Oblivion Gate. See the Oblivion Gates Shut page for more info.
    • If the player does not have the Saddle save set up already, Perma Key can be used to skip having to find a key to get to the top of the tower normally.
  • A save should be made outside of the Sigil Room for setting up the Instant Gate glitch during Great Gate.
  • The door to the Kvatch Chapel runs a script when you activate it that de-aggros all enemies. A Load Warp can be set by this door up during this quest to get out of any problematic enemy aggro throughout the run.

8 Savlian Matius asked me to help close the Oblivion Gate outside the ruins of Kvatch. He sent some of his men into it, but they never came back. I should let him know when I'm ready to help.
10 I have agreed to help Savlian Matius of the Kvatch Town Guard and his men as they attempt to reach some survivors trapped in the Chapel of Akatosh inside the city. He is willing to lead his guardsmen back into the city to attempt a rescue, but the enemy have opened an Oblivion Gate across the entry to the city.

then I need to go into the Oblivion Gate and figure out how to close it.

20 Ilend Vonius, one of the Kvatch Guardsmen who entered the Oblivion Gate to try to close it, told me that at least one other survivor of the assault on the Gate has been taken to the large tower within Oblivion. I should search for him there. (This will appear in your journal if you have not told Savlian Matius you will try to close the Oblivion Gate)

25 (Player asked Ilend to come along)
30 I found the prisoner in Oblivion. He told me I need to reach the top of the largest tower and look for the Sigil Stone. But I will need the Sigil Keeper's key to gain entry into the Sigil Keep.
40 I have the key to the Sigil Keep.

then Now I must reach the Sigil Stone and remove it from the Sigil Keep to close the Oblivion Gate that it anchors.

50 I have closed the Gate by taking the Sigil Stone that anchors it within Oblivion. I should tell Savlian Matius that the way into Kvatch is now open.
60 Savlian Matius of the Kvatch Town Guard has asked me to aid him as he and his men attempt to re-take the city of Kvatch. They're pushing in now; I'll need to follow closely and make sure Savlian survives.
70 I have entered the ruined city of Kvatch with Savlian Matius and his men. We must clear the southern plaza before the survivors in the Chapel can be rescued.
80 I have helped Savlian Matius and his men retake the southern plaza. I should talk to him about our next move.
90 It is now safe for the survivors of the attack on Kvatch to leave the Chapel for safety in the camp south of the city. Savlian has asked me to help him further. I should let him know when I am ready.
200 Savlian Matius has been killed. (This quest is marked as finished once the refugees reach the encampment. This Journal Entry does not appear in-game as Savlian Matius cannot be killed.)
