Current Best Route

Quest stages are indicated in parentheses at the end of each step when they are updated. Keep in mind that these optimized steps are within the context of the 100% speedrun route, meaning that certain items and setups are sometimes assumed to have already been performed prior to the start of the quest.

  1. Fast travel to Bleak Mine, North of Anvil, and enter it using the Perma Key glitch.
  2. Hug the left wall, freeing the ogres from the two cages. The quest should update. Make sure the Ogres do not die. (36) (50)
  3. Exit the mine and quicksave/quickload to draw all of the enemies outside. Kill the enemies without killing any ogres.
  4. Fast travel to Malacath’s Shrine NW from Bleak Mine and activate the shrine. Wait for the cutscene to end. (✔ 100)
  5. Drop the Volendrung quest reward.

Bugs

Currently there are no known bugs associated with this quest that affect the 100% route.

Route Logic Considerations

  • The Arkay Wayshrine is just ESE of Bleak Mine, so it should be activated during this quest.
  • If you kill the Ogres you will not be awarded the Daedric Artifact and be unable to get 100% completion.
  • This is one of the only Daedric Shrine quests that can be completed at any level due to a sequence break.
  • The setup for this quest skips one instance of cutscenes, but there is still one cutscene that can't be skipped with current strategies.

10 One of Malacath's worshippers has told me that, in order to have the Daedra summoned, I must leave an offering of Troll Fat at the statue. [You must be level 10 to begin this quest.]
20 When I left the offering, Malacath was summoned and spoke to me. He tasked me with traveling to the estate of Lord Drad and freeing his ogre slaves.
30 I have spoken with Lord Drad. He believes the ogres to be suitable slaves, as they are mindless beasts, and is pleased with the ogres he uses in Bleak Mine. I appears I will have to free the ogres myself, if I am to complete Malacath's task for me.
31 I have spoken with Lord Drad. He believes the ogres to be suitable slaves, as it does not violate Imperial Law. I fear I've angered him, though, and he will no longer speak with me. Perhaps his wife will be more forthcoming.
34 Lady Drad has told me that the ogres are located in Bleak Mine, not far from here. I will have to go free them to appease Malacath.
35 I have entered Bleak Mine. Now I must free Malacath's ogres.
36 I freed one group of ogres. I must check to see if there are more to be freed. (if stage 37 has not been done)
37 I freed one group of ogres. I must check to see if there are more to be freed. (if stage 36 has not been done)
50 I have freed all the ogres in the Bleak Mine. I should return to the Shrine of Malacath.
100 Malacath was satisfied with my efforts to free the ogres. He has rewarded me with Volendrung.
200 Malacath wanted his ogres freed... not killed. Now there's no chance of earning the reward he promised.
