Current Best Route

Quest stages are indicated in parentheses at the end of each step when they are updated. Keep in mind that these optimized steps are within the context of the 100% speedrun route, meaning that certain items and setups are sometimes assumed to have already been performed prior to the start of the quest.

This quest assumes you have Apotheosis and are at around level 26.

  1. Fast travel to the Imperial City Arena.
  2. Head through the gate and to the left to make a save outside the left door to the Arena Bloodworks. This will be called Arena_Save later.
  3. Head SSE outside to find a locked chest by the brawlers. Take the Bands of Kwang Lao from the chest.
  4. Quicksave, load the Arena_Save, then Load Warp the quicksave through the door.
  5. Talk to Owyn.
I want to be a combatant.
    I’ll take the Light Raiment.
  6. Equip the Arena Light Raiment.
  7. Wait until it is between 9am-9pm and talk to Owyn again.
    Ready for a Match. (20)
  8. For the first fight, turn to the right as you exit your tunnel and jump to clip through the back wall. Jump around the perimeter out of bounds until you can Void Warp into your opponent’s side. Kill them, then Save Clip through the right corner between the gate and the wall. Save Clip through the left side of the next gate by jumping up to the left and getting stuck.
  9. When the gates start lowering, go through the door. Quicksave, go back through the door, and quickload. This activates a glitch where all future gates will be lowered automatically.
  10. Talk to Owyn again to get the reward, then talk to him again.
    Ready for a Match.
  11. For all future fights up until the Grand Champion fight, do not use your mouse when you enter the fight. Run up to the top of the steps, making sure not to run out of the tunnel, which would start the announcer voice. Use Apotheosis to kill opponents from afar. Always exit the fight as soon as the announcer starts talking to keep the gate lowered for the next fight. Talk to Owyn between fights when it is between 9am-9pm. There are a few unique fights:
    • When Owyn says “Your next opponent wears a Heavy Raiment, but attacks with a short sword.” The opponent will take two hits instead of one.
    • When Owyn says “This next one’s a Breton. He looks like a bit of a dandy…” The opponent will take two hits instead of one.
    • When Owyn says “Okay, Hero. This next opponent is a High Elf wizard.” for one of the last fights, you will not be able to kill with the staff. Equip the Bands of Kwang Lao and sneak attack him three times to kill him. Re-equip Apotheosis and the Arena Light Raiment after the fight.
    • For the Champion Fight, the gate glitch will not work for the fight after this one, so you can run further out to get more accurate staff shots. (40)
  12. In the Bloodworks, talk to Agronak gro-Malog.
No, I don’t want to challenge you.
    The Gray Prince.
I may be able to help. Tell me more.
Cut to the chase already, gro-Malog!
  13. Talk to Agronak gro-Malog again.
Yes, I wish to challenge you.
  14. Drop the Arena Light Raiment and talk to Ysabel Andronicus, who is in the same area as Owyn, on the other end.
    Ready for a Match.
    [Any.]
  15. Repeat the wall clip strategy from the first fight. Pay attention to whether or not Agronak is behind his gate, because sometimes he spawns in the middle of the Arena. If this is the case, Void Warp to the middle instead. After killing Agronak, take Agronak’s Raiment off his corpse.
  16. Quicksave, load the Arena_Save, then Load Warp the quicksave through the door.
  17. Talk to Ysabel Andronicus.
Give me the Light Raiment of Valor. (50)
  18. Enter and exit dialogue with Ysabel again to update the quest one final time. (100)

This quest is technically unfinishable, so reaching stage 100 counts it as "complete" as per the Journal-Filled requirement.

Bugs

Currently there are no known bugs associated with this quest that affect the 100% route.

Route Logic Considerations

  • The skill book Song of Hrormir [Blade] is in the same chest as the Bands of Kwang Lao, so it should be read during this quest.
  • The skill book The Ransom of Zarek [Athletics] is in a cupboard along the wall near Owyn, so it should be read during this quest.
  • The Arena Light Raiment should be chosen over the heavy version since it doesn't slow the player down as much.
  • Agronak gro-Malog needs to be killed during this quest, so talking to him to start Origin of the Gray Prince should be done during this quest just before challenging him. The steps listed for the Arena quest will auto complete Origin of the Gray Prince as well.
  • Each Arena combatant that you kill rewards you with Fame, so if there is a way to sequence break this quest, it would not be able to be used for the 100% route.

10 If I wish to join the Arena faction as a combatant, I must speak with Owyn the Blademaster in the Arena Bloodworks.
20 I am now a combatant in the Arena faction. To arrange for a match, I must speak with Owyn in the Arena Bloodworks, in the Imperial City. After every match, I must speak to Owyn again to close out the match and receive any rewards earned. While I'm involved in any active matches, I will be unable to bet on any fights.
40 I am now an Arena Champion. There are no more standard matches left to fight. Instead, I must challenge the Grand Champion, Agronak gro-Malog, for his title.
50 I have defeated the Gray Prince and have been named the new Arena Grand Champion! Ysabel Andronicus told me to return to her after I've gotten some rest, so we can discuss my future.
100 As Arena Grand Champion, I can fight in weekly matches against various creatures. All I need do is see Ysabel Andronicus in the Arena Bloodworks and tell her I'm ready for a match.
