Current Best Route

Quest stages are indicated in parentheses at the end of each step when they are updated. Keep in mind that these optimized steps are within the context of the 100% speedrun route, meaning that certain items and setups are sometimes assumed to have already been performed prior to the start of the quest.

  1. Reach level 5 and acquire a Black Soul Gem.
  2. Fast travel to Vaermina’s Shrine, SW of Cheydinhal.
  3. Activate the shrine.
    Select “Yes.” (This offers the Black Soul Gem.)
  4. Wait for the cutscene to end. Fast travel to the Quest Marker to enter Arkved’s Tower. (20)
  5. Head straight through the first two zones, and go up the staircase in the third zone. In the fourth zone, go straight, right, then left. Go straight through the fifth zone.
  6. In the sixth and final zone, activate the gate to open it. Follow the Quest Marker to take the Orb of Vaermina. (30)
  7. Follow the Quest Marker to exit through the door on the other end of the room.

Route Logic Considerations

  • The skill book Palla, volume 1 [Illusion] is on the same table as the orb.
  • The Black Soul Gem is relatively difficult to acquire. The most efficient location is from a relatively low drop chance from each Necromancer in Howling Cave during Meridia, so that quest should always be done first. However, the inventories of the Necromancers seem to be set in a way that they cannot be rerolled despite being different on each playthrough. In the event one does not drop, you have to make one at the Dark Fissure altar, which requires lots of 24 wait cycles. See the Black Soul Gem item page for more details. We need to either implement an efficient Time Warping system or find an alternative dungeon to reroll drop chances.

20 After I left an offering of a black soul gem, Vaermina's followers summoned the Daedra, who spoke to me. Vaermina told me of an Orb that had been stolen by the wizard Arkved. I am to travel to his tower, retrieve the Orb, and bring it back to Vaermina.
30 I have retrieved the Orb of Vaermina. I should now return it to the Shrine.
100 Vaermina was pleased that I returned the Orb of Vaermina. I have been rewarded with the Skull of Corruption.
